Making Space For Deep Work

Making space for deep work. That’s why I am planning to take several weeks off from writing our weekly Reflections to permit for some an awful lot needed “deep work”. During this sprint, I plan to commit my focused electricity towards Reflection.  The concept of “deep work” turned into popularized by way of researcher and productivity expert Cal Newport in his book Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World.

Newport defines deep work as: “Professional pastime accomplished in a country of distraction-free concentration that pushes your cognitive skills to their limit. These efforts create new value, improve your skill, and are tough to replicate.”

It’s a treasured talent to hone, regardless of your craft. It’s also turning into simultaneously more precious and rarer. Deep work calls for us to be enormously intentional with our time, which is hard while we’ve got a lot of factors vying for our attention.

Newport gives three strategies to construct a deep work habit:

  1. Schedule distraction-unfastened periods, preferably with robust begin and forestall times.
  2. Develop a regular in-depth work schedule, so that you no longer need to determine while or if you may move deep that day. Newport suggests blocking off time within the morning if possible. Watch the sunset, work in the garden, do yoga. These activities may help to clear your mind.
  3. Have a daily ‘shutdown’ ritual in which you create a plan for the way you’ll end unfinished chores the next day. This will help you disconnect for the night and get sound sleep so you may be ready and energized the next day.

We’re excited to check out those principles all through our very own deep work sprint, and we’ll make sure to proportion our learnings as soon as we’re back.

While we’re taking a break, we’ve collected some of our favorite Reflections from the archive and can be sharing one every week. We hope this is a manner to revisit the thoughts that maximum resonated with our community while keeping with the weekly Reflections tradition. So, these are three strategies for making space for deep work.
